Individual Therapy for High Achievers and Anxious Minds
You're capable, motivated, and used to figuring things out, and still, something keeps pulling you back. I offer individual therapy virtually throughout California, including Sacramento.

Individual Therapy in Sacramento & Throughout California
Individual therapy is a space to slow down, understand yourself more deeply, and build a life and relationships that actually feel like yours.
I'm Monica Burford, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist offering individual therapy for anxiety, perfectionism, self-criticism, and life transitions. I work with adults virtually throughout California, including Sacramento, the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and San Diego.
Whether it's a transition that's harder than you expected, or there's a voice in your head that's never quite satisfied, or maybe it's a pattern in your relationships you keep repeating and can't seem to break, I'm here to help. If any of the following resonate, let's talk:
-
You're a college student or young adult finding your footing. Adjusting to life on your own, figuring out who you are outside the structure you've always known, or navigating what comes after graduation.
-
You're driven and high-achieving, but hold yourself to a standard that's hard to meet, and you're often the last person you'd offer patience or grace to.
-
You find it hard to slow down. Your mind is always moving, your list is never done, and rest feels like something you have to earn.
-
You want to understand what's driving you, the need to stay on top of things, the self-judgment, the difficulty setting limits, and connect with what actually matters to you.
-
You keep running into the same dynamics with your parents and you're ready to understand them, not just survive them.
-
You want support navigating romantic relationships: understanding the patterns you bring, communicating more clearly, and showing up the way you want to.
My Approach to Individual Therapy

My work with individual clients is grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and TEAM-CBT. TEAM-CBT is an evidence-based model developed by Dr. David Burns that builds on traditional CBT by paying close attention to what you actually want to change and what might be getting in the way, then using targeted methods to help you get there. Progress is measured at every session, so you can see it and not just feel it.
In practice, this means exploring the thoughts, beliefs, and patterns that shape how you see yourself and move through your life. For high achievers and people managing anxiety, perfectionism, or persistent self-criticism, that often looks like understanding the self-critical voice, setting more realistic expectations, and building a relationship with yourself that's a little less punishing. For those in transition, it can mean finding clarity on who you are and what actually matters to you.
When relational dynamics are part of what brings you to therapy, whether that's understanding patterns with a parent or navigating romantic relationships, I draw on the Gottman Method to help you make sense of what you're carrying and learn to show up differently. This is somewhat unusual in individual work, and it's one of the things clients tell me makes the biggest difference.
I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT #109798) working with individuals virtually throughout California, including Sacramento, the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and San Diego.
